US To Intervene In 4th Circ. Fannie, Freddie Taxation Row

Law360, New York (September 13, 2013, 5:09 PM EDT) -- The United States will intervene in a consolidated class action accusing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac of failing to pay state and municipal taxes, the Fourth Circuit said Thursday, after all parties welcomed the intervention.

The appellate court granted the government's motion to intervene in two cases, both of which were dismissed by federal judges earlier this year on the grounds that federal statutory exemptions precluded the imposition of certain state and municipal taxes on the mortgage giants.
