Chevron Shakes NJ Claims In MDL Over MTBE Pollution

Law360, New York (February 6, 2014, 8:25 PM EST) -- A federal judge on Thursday disposed of New Jersey’s claims against Chevron USA Inc. in a member case of multidistrict litigation over methyl tertiary-butyl ether groundwater contamination, saying state authorities had inexcusably failed to disclose their sole theory of liability.

U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin cleared Chevron of claims related to the last of four “trial sites” that New Jersey environmental regulators had accused it and other energy suppliers of polluting years ago with the controversial gasoline additive MTBE and its byproduct tertiary butyl alcohol.
