Volkswagen Emissions Fraud MDL Consolidated In California

Peter Kang (December 8, 2015, 10:30 PM EST) -- The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Tuesday consolidated more than 500 suits accusing Volkswagen of cheating emissions standards, saying California federal court in San Francisco is the best venue given that nearly one-fifth of the suits were filed in the Golden State.

The JPML said any number of district courts could've handled the case, including Volkswagen AG and the U.S. Department of Justice's preferred venue of the Eastern District of Michigan, but California's Northern District has 30 pending actions — including the nation's first-filed case — while the state as a whole has 100 of 513 nationwide federal lawsuits....
