Ill. Judge Removed From Bench Over Mortgage Fraud Charges

Law360, Chicago (April 26, 2017, 3:35 PM EDT) -- A Cook County, Illinois, judge was removed from the bench Wednesday, the same day she entered a plea of not guilty to federal charges that she ran a $1.4 million mortgage fraud scheme before she became a judge.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Jessica Arong O'Brien appeared in federal court Wednesday morning to answer to charges of mail fraud and bank fraud connected to an alleged plot to defraud lenders with falsified mortgage and commercial loan applications. She pled not guilty to the charges, each of which comes with a 30-year maximum prison sentence.
