Texas Jury Awards $21.1M To Broadband Patent Owner

Law360, New York (August 8, 2017, 4:05 PM EDT) -- A Texas federal jury has awarded a defense contractor $21.1 million in damages after determining that Hughes Network Systems LLC infringed one of two of its broadband patents used at offshore drilling sites.

The jury determined that Hughes infringed U.S. Patent Number 6,240,073 held by Elbit Systems of America LLC, but that Hughes did not infringe the second patent at issue in the case, which remained in the Lone Star state after the Federal Circuit in July affirmed a ruling denying Hughes' bid to move the case based on the U.S. Supreme Court's recent TC Heartland decision.
