DC Metro's $6.5M Discrimination Deal Scores Early OK

Law360, New York (December 8, 2017, 7:19 PM EST) -- A D.C. federal judge on Thursday gave preliminary approval to a $6.5 million settlement in a certified class action alleging Metrorail’s criminal background check policy disproportionately discriminated against African-Americans.

U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer gave an early OK to the deal with three certified groups of African-American employees and job applicants who claimed the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which runs the D.C. Metrorail, instituted a criminal screening policy that had a disparate impact on black individuals.
