BP announced a $175 million settlement late Thursday to resolve a group of securities lawsuits arising from the deadly 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico hours after a Texas federal judge denied the shareholders an early win in the multidistrict litigation.

A Texas federal judge on Thursday refused to give BP shareholders a quick win in their securities suit alleging BP told the public the Deepwater Horizon spill was smaller than it actually was, finding that while the group has provided evidence to merit a trial, the evidence doesn't merit judgment in its favor.
