Ill. Steel Maker Sued Over Biometric Employee Tracking

Law360 (June 13, 2018, 7:29 PM EDT) -- A former employee at steel maker A. Finkl & Sons Co. hit the company with a proposed class action on Wednesday over its employee timekeeping system that uses handprints to track when workers begin and end their days.

The suit is the latest in a multiyear wave of litigation brought under Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, which makes companies liable for damages if they fail to properly keep people informed about the use of their biometric identifiers like fingerprints, retina scans and facial geometry.
