That number makes up 2.4 percent of the total private sector work force. Another 5.9 million work for franchises such as McDonald's, and, according to an industry association, an additional 2.7 to 3.4 million work on an ongoing basis through professional employment organizations (PEO), which assume all of the payroll, benefits and human resources functions of their client entities and, most importantly, serve as the employer of record for those employees....
