At that time, coal accounted for over 60 percent of the electric generation in the United States. But both were supplanted by combined cycle gas turbines, or CCGTs, which are less costly to construct and, thanks to fracking, less costly to operate. As a result of this paradigm change, nuclear and coal facility valuations declined significantly — to the point that many coal plants closed, and states intervened with zero-emissions credits, or ZECs, to prop up nuclear facilities' continued generation.[1]...
